gap summer is ideal for intellectually curious high school graduates who want to spend their summer doing something thoughtful and transformative before they go to college or as they consider future plans. through one of our unique, specialized tracks of study — culture or the world — gap summer students will be challenged and inspired while using the people and places of new york city as their classroom. during gap summer, the people you meet, the knowledge you gain and the perspectives you develop provide a solid foundation as you prepare for the next chapter of your life.

Summer 2020 Schedule
Each week of the summer term is dedicated to a different Section Study where students dive deep into an important social, cultural or global topic led by a faculty member who is an expert in the field. Modules include classroom discussions, synthesis assignments and site visits offering networking opportunities and career exposure.
Gap Summer is divided into two distinct, specialized tracks that allow students to focus on a curated selection of our Section Study modules. The Culture track immerses students in the creative and cultural communities of New York City, while The World track helps students develop a global mindset by exploring some of the most important issues of our time. The specific Section Study modules for each track will be announced in early 2020. Both tracks are taught by expert practitioners and adhere to the same schedule.

During Orientation & Welcome Week, Gap Year students will get to know their fellow cohort members and the program staff and leadership team. They will be oriented to The School’s campus in Midtown Manhattan, learn the basic geography of New York City and tour The New York Times Building. Students will also become familiar with the overall semester schedule and Section Study modules. Week One will include the kickoff of Future Focused Plan, an individual development plan with goals tailored to each student to help track personal and academic development throughout the course of the program.
In Week Two students will dive into their tracks and start their first Section Study. Regardless of which track a student chooses, the first module is designed to acclimate them to living and learning in New York City. Our Student Life program will kick off that evening with activities designed to take students from tourist to New Yorker in just a few weeks. Students spend Friday’s working on their Future Focused Plan by themselves, with a peer group and the Student Life Team.
During Week Two, students will also experience their Service Learning Day, which gives students the opportunity to develop civic engagement skills by working with community members.
Week Three kicks off the second Section Study and students are immersed in their course work from Monday through Thursday. Whether in class or with their peers, students will take advantage of all that New York City has to offer. Students will also experience their first Cohort Outing and Dinner Networking Series. Cohort Outings include special events like theater shows, workshops such as Entrepreneurship 101 or just-for-fun activities like an Instagram dessert tour. The Dinner Networking Series is designed to be an informal meal with a carefully curated, rotating group of interesting guests.
while many students aren’t familiar with only taking one class at a time, most will have fully shifted into the section study model as they kick off module three. in week four, students will have a chance to review their future focused plans with the student life team, update personal and academic goals and ask for specific networking opportunities through areas not covered in the program curriculum.
In Week Five, students move into the next Section Study and begin to work on their Storytelling Project, which helps students reflect upon their time in the program and synthesize the academic and personal elements of the program in a final project.
week six is the final section study. comfortable with new york city and with an eye towards the fall, students will finish up their formal course work and begin to focus their time exclusively on their storytelling project. students will conduct an in-depth review of their future focused plan in a one-on-one session with their student life team member as they begin to look towards the future.
2020欧洲杯备用网址the student schedule shifts during week seven with the transition from the section study model to the completion of the storytelling project. between their student life and additional academic supports, students will work through a project plan to help them understand how best to manage and structure their time.
In the final week of the program students complete and present their work to date on their Storytelling Project2020欧洲杯备用网址, reset their Future Focused Plan for the year ahead and take full advantage of the student life activities planned around New York City. While many students will not want to leave, all will be proud of their personal development and growth over the summer. Students will also have the opportunity to share next steps with each other and provide feedback on the overall Gap Summer experience.
