Each Section Study corresponds to a section of the newspaper and uses the people and places of New York City to explore current events and topical issues of our time.


through guided discussions and self-reflection, students develop a timesian way of thinking and learn to understand and form perspectives on a range of relevant, real world subject matter. collectively, section studies create a foundation of knowledge that help students become well-rounded, thoughtful and informed citizens while providing a core set of life skills that will prepare students for college and the world beyond the classroom. these skills include: content knowledge, critical thinking, communication, media literacy, and career exploration.

2020欧洲杯备用网址section study modules are led by subject matter experts and include a combination of reading assignments, lectures, guest speakers, group discussions, site visits, workshops and a culminating project on the topic of each week. the topics are always relevant to something that is happening in the world today and form the basis for a broader conversation.

as the arts and culture capital of the world, new york city is a cultural playground with offerings that are classical and traditional or underground and bohemian as well as everything in between. our arts section follows how works of art are made — visual art, music, film, theater, dance and more — and how artists themselves move from idea to execution to encore. how did new york city become such a focal point for the arts and the creative industries? who are the movers and shakers of this industry? what goes on behind-the-scenes?

Arts Section modules may include: the impact of Broadway on popular culture, art and social activism, fashion as artistic expression, the museums of New York City and more.


how do the books we know and love — and all of the adventures, dramas, mysteries and characters within them — come to exist? beyond the appetite of readers, there’s an industry that drives which authors get published and which books end up on our shelves. for generations, the new york times has been a major player in this industry with its book reviews and best sellers list. our book section explores the publishing ecosystem and the unique roles of the writers, editors, publishers, readers and more.

Book Section modules may include: the rise of self-publishing, how technology has disrupted the publishing industry, how criticism shapes different genres, how fan fiction shapes pop culture and more.


our business section explores the global flow of money, power and influence through new york city, the united states and the world at large. through a business lens, we will explore how financial decisions and economic outcomes shape our daily lives and how political and cultural movements shape everything from small businesses to global economies. we’ll also look at thriving sectors, major industry trends and powerhouse companies making business headlines.

Business Section modules may include: the role of entrepreneurship in the global market, the economics of the music industry, real estate development and gentrification, #metoo in the workplace and more.


2020欧洲杯备用网址new york city has a rich culture of preparing, cooking and consuming food. with more than 24,000 restaurants in manhattan alone (according to current estimates), new yorkers are spoiled for choice when it comes to learning about not just cuisine, but a myriad of other topics. food is a perfect lens through which one can explore cultural identity, the economy, the environment, ethics, education and much more. the new york times is known for their food coverage, from reporting on the latest trends to filing investigative reports on the working conditions of restaurant staff. through restaurants visits, conversations with culinary experts, market tours and cooking sessions, our food section will examine the history and business of food in new york city and beyond.

Food Section modules may include: the #MeToo movement’s impact on the restaurant industry, food sustainability, celebrity food culture and more.


amid a climate of polarization, distrust and often shrinking newsrooms, opinion sections face unusual challenges and possible opportunities. at a time when people have unprecedented options to share their opinions freely online, how can media use their opinion sections to inspire healthier discourse and lift up a greater diversity of ideas and perspectives? for decades, the times’s op-ed section has aimed to help people imagine the world as it could be, through rich discussion and intelligent debate. our opinion section uses new york city as the context for reporting and writing on a wide range of issues, from the personal to societal.

Politics Section modules may include: sanctuary cities and immigration policy, neighborhood development and gentrification, school segregation and educational equity, livable cities in the age of climate change and more.


a study of sports moves beyond the box score and explores stories at the intersection of business, science and health, entertainment, social activism, ethics and more. our sports section will explore diverse sports-related topics beyond the leagues, teams and players at the forefront of the industry. we’ll ask questions about how technology and big data drive athletic performance. we’ll explore business activities ranging from ticket sales, sponsorships and merchandising to media rights and more. we might discuss how mvps and weekend warriors cope with mental health or how athletes today are personalities and content creators as much as they are players.

Sports Section modules may include: political protests and the voice of the athlete, the intersection of sports science and athletic performance, sporting events as the heart and soul of a city and more.


dubbed “the jazz hands of the new york times,” the newspaper’s style section has long been the go-to resource for all things fashion, hype and self-care. from the rise of athleisure to widespread public discourse on sustainable clothing, the world of style is constantly evolving to meet the needs and desires of our society. modern materials, production techniques, supply chains and distribution channels have created an atmosphere of innovation and creativity unlike anything the fashion world has previously seen. though site visits, interviews with designers, collection sketching and personal writing, our style section will help students discover the fascinating world where beauty and creativity fuse with innovation and entrepreneurship.

Style Section modules may include: technology’s impact on our relationship with clothing and accessories, the impact of influencer marketing and more.


new york city is a global destination with a vibrant mix of world influences. we will travel across the five boroughs to explore what is one of the largest and most ethnically and culturally diverse metropolises in the world. combining site visits, photography, personal writing, reviews and practical tips, our travel section modules help students imagine where they could go, how to savor their experience in a place and how to document their journey along the way. we leverage two signature new york times travel features as our inspiration and framework: the “36 hours” collection of must-see, must-do guides to cities around the world and the “52 places to go” list, an annual project where the times sends one intrepid journalist to 52 global destinations each week of the year.

Travel Section modules may include: an exploration of New York City’s distinct neighborhoods and communities, the impact of restaurants and cultural institutions on global tourism and more.


the interconnected nature of our world means we should be aware of the political, economic, cultural and environmental contexts of places we don’t call home. in our world section, we will come to understand some of the most pressing issues of our time that transcend national boundaries and affect countries and populations for better or worse. in an age where social media has given us immediate access to information and voices from all corners of the globe, we will learn how to make sense of complex topics and develop informed perspectives on important issues being discussed and debated on the world stage.

World Section modules may include: the impact of climate change on society, turmoil in the Middle East, the reemergence of populism, the threat of atomic energy and more.
